Ashfield's housing tells a story you can read at the switchboard. The grand Victorian and Federation homes that once lined these streets were largely replaced from the 1920s and 30s by art deco walk-up flats and brick semis, then again by post-war low-rise blocks.

That leaves a suburb where most homes and units carry wiring from an era before modern safety rules.

Plenty of these dwellings were wired before safety switches were standard. If your board still runs ceramic fuses with no RCD on the circuits, a shock has nothing to trip it.

Sometimes that means a patch. Often it means a full rewire, because cloth-insulated runs from the interwar years are not something to leave live.
